Why We Finally Started Taking Our Health Seriously

There comes a point in life where you start paying closer attention to the things around you — the food you eat, the products you use, the amount of movement your body gets, and honestly…how you feel every single day. For us, that realization slowly started building over time through research, social media videos, documentaries, podcasts, and just everyday conversations about health and wellness. Everywhere we looked, we kept seeing the same message: our bodies are constantly exposed to things that may not always be the healthiest for us.

That realization became the starting point for a major lifestyle shift.

For years, we considered ourselves “semi-regular” gym goers. We would go through phases where we were motivated, consistent, and excited to work out. But like many people, life always seemed to get in the way. After long workdays, the last thing we wanted to do was drive to a crowded gym, change clothes, work out for an hour, then drive home just to rush through dinner before collapsing into bed. The desire to stay healthy was there — the consistency just wasn’t.

And honestly, consistency is where real change happens.

I had always dreamed of having a workout space at home. Somewhere convenient. Somewhere comfortable. A place where working out didn’t feel like another chore added onto an already busy day. The idea of being able to walk downstairs and immediately start moving felt so much more realistic for our lifestyle than relying on gym memberships we weren’t fully utilizing.

But our fitness journey actually started before the gym equipment ever entered the picture.

If you’ve read our blog, “From Our Garden to Yours,” then you already know that Spring of 2025 became a turning point for us. That was when we really began paying attention to what we were putting into our bodies. We started growing more of our own food, making homemade breads and pastas, experimenting with healthier ingredients, and learning how to preserve produce from our garden through things like salsa and pasta sauces.

It became less about dieting and more about creating a healthier lifestyle overall.

Still, one major piece of the puzzle was missing: movement.

We all know exercise is important, but as we continue getting older, it becomes even more necessary to keep our bodies moving. Strength training, cardio, flexibility, balance, endurance — they all play a role in maintaining long-term health and quality of life. The problem was never understanding the importance of exercise. The problem was follow-through.

The gym itself wasn’t failing us.

We were failing to make it fit naturally into our everyday lives.

That’s when we realized convenience matters more than perfection. Having access to equipment at home removed so many of the excuses that kept us from staying consistent. No travel time. No waiting for machines. No monthly membership fees draining our bank account while we skipped workouts. Just a space built specifically for us and our goals.

Ironically, the opportunity to create that space came from something completely unexpected.

In August of 2025, Southeastern Wisconsin was hit with devastating flooding, and unfortunately, our basement was completely destroyed. What had once been a finished entertainment area became a total gut renovation. At first, it felt overwhelming — tearing everything apart and starting over from scratch.

But sometimes difficult situations create opportunities you never would have considered otherwise.

When we originally remodeled our basement years ago, our focus was hosting people, entertaining, and creating a social gathering space. But life changes. Priorities change. And honestly, we’ve entered a stage of life where we appreciate being home more than ever. Cozy nights at home have started sounding far more appealing than crowded weekends out.

So as we began rebuilding the basement, we decided to create a space that matched where we are in life now — healthier habits, intentional living, and investing in ourselves.

That included finally building the home gym we had talked about for years.

And that’s exactly what Fit, Built & Balanced is all about.

This blog is going to document our journey toward creating a healthier, more balanced lifestyle while building a home and routines that support it.

As we continue growing, we plan to share honest recommendations for products we personally use, love, and believe add value to our lives — whether that’s workout equipment, recovery tools, workout essentials, supplements, or cozy lifestyle upgrades that make healthy living more enjoyable and sustainable.

Most importantly, we hope this space inspires others who may feel overwhelmed when starting their own journey.

You do not need a perfect body.
You do not need a perfect routine.
You do not need to spend hours in a gym every day.

Sometimes the biggest transformation simply starts with creating a lifestyle that makes healthier choices easier to stick with.

And for us, this is just the beginning.
